The Anointing of the Sick is one of the sacraments of healing, along with Reconciliation. It is a powerful gift of God’s mercy, given to strengthen, comfort, and heal those who are suffering from serious illness, the frailty of old age, or the danger of death.
This sacrament is not only for the moment of death; it is meant for anyone who is seriously ill in body, mind, or spirit. It can be received more than once if the person’s condition worsens or if a new serious illness arises. It is a sacrament of hope and peace, not fear.
As the Letter of James says:
“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up” (James 5:14–15).
The forgiveness of sins (if the person is unable to go to Confession)
The grace to face suffering with peace and courage
Sometimes physical healing, if it is God’s will
Union with the suffering of Christ, who brings meaning even to pain
Preparation for the final journey, for those nearing death
